New records in passenger and cargo traffic at Munich Airport

The number of takeoffs and landings improved by more than nine percent up to 202.000 aircraft movements. That traffic-growth is significantly higher than the average increase rate of other german and european airports.

The growth momentum that was already increasing in the second half of last year, has  once again strengthened itself in the first six months of 2011. A particularly strong increase in passenger traffic hab been recorded with the so-called 'BRICS' countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).

The number of passengers on the routes into these five growth markets in the first six years at Munich Airport grew by an average of 26 percent to a total of more than 900,000 passengers. A new daily peak on the departure day was set up in the Whitsun: Friday, the 10th June 2011 there were - for the first time - more than 130,000 passengers handled in a single day in Munich.

Even more increasing than the passenger volume was the freight traffic at the Munich airport. Never before it has handled so many goods and commodities in the first half of a year: The new record now stands at a total of 144.600 tons of flown airfreight, an increase of 14 percent over the previous year.

Given the boom in airport traffic, CEO Mr. Kerkloh again raised the importance of the two central strategic expansion projects at Munich Airport. Only with the construction of the planned third runway and landing strip and the already approved construction of the building-arm to Terminal 2, the Munich airport can fulfill its important role as an international aviation hub in the future.

The two expansion-projects guarantee the much needed capacity and long-term competitiveness of the airport. Kerklohs outlook: "Now it's up to the Munich airport to maintain our high quality standards - even and especially when we rise in traffic to a higher category. Create quantity and sercure quality, that is our task for the next few years."
