Climate protection for Oberstdorf

The warning signals of our environment are the biggest sociopolitical and environmental challenge of our time. There’s no doubt about it. Extreme weather incidents such as floodings or hurricanes are on the increase, the glaciers are melting and winter is getting milder and milder. The Kyoto Protocol of December 1997 for the first time defined binding target values concerning the emission of greenhouse gases, the main causes for global warming. At that time the reduction of the annual emissions of greenhouse gases in industrial nations by 5,2 percent (compared to 1990) was determined. Until the UN Climate Change Conference in December 2007 at Bali there was only little change concerning the greenhouse gas emissions – therefore forceful steps are in demand now. The federal republic of Germany is planning to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions until 2002 by 40 percent (compared to 1990).

In order to realise this ambitious plan nationwide, each municipality is in demand. Each one! And quickly! Oberstdorf acts now and increases the part of its hydropower again. Oberstdorf – Germany’s southernmost place, ski and hiking paradise – lives on its vacationers. Intact nature, fresh air … attributes that spot Oberstdorf. That´s another reason to go for clean energy from hydropower – and at the same time increase the security of supply and the independence from big electricity suppliers.

An important result of the increasing part of regenerative energies: Oberstdorf lastingly places itself in
the competition of alpine vacation spots. The aim is the “German hydropower championship“. The process of certification within the “European energy awards“ is ongoing. Technically hydropower is above all a driving force for tourists – of course the turbine house of the intended plant will be vitreous. Moreoever an exciting hydropower nature trail is intended.

Oberstdorf prepares itself for climate change and at the same time for a steady assurance of its principal source of income: clean and eco-friendly tourism.
